If you ask me, Chicago in the summer is completely unbeatable. The energy along the river, the lakefront breeze, and the endless parade of outdoor street markets make it one of the best cities in the world to explore. Whether you are coming for the world class food, the architecture, or just a solid long weekend escape, this itinerary hits all the heavy hitters while weaving in a surprising nature getaway just down the lake.
Getting In and Out of Chicago
Getting to downtown Chicago is straightforward whether you fly, drive, or take the train.
Flying In: O’Hare (ORD) vs. Midway (MDW)
- From O’Hare (ORD): Hop on the CTA Blue Line train right inside the airport terminals. It runs 24/7 directly into downtown (The Loop) in about 45 minutes. Taxis and rideshares are also available, but heavy freeway traffic can easily turn the ride into an hour or more.
- From Midway (MDW): Take the CTA Orange Line train via the connected airport walkway. It delivers you downtown in roughly 25 minutes. Midway is generally closer to downtown, making taxis and rideshares quick from Midway too.
Driving In
- If you are driving into the city, be prepared for tolls on major interstates like I-90 and I-294 (which use the automatic I-PASS or EZ-Pass system).
- Parking downtown can be expensive. To avoid hotel valet fees, book a parking spot in advance using apps like SpotHero or ParkWhiz, or park your car at an outer CTA “Park & Ride” station lot and take the train into downtown.
Arriving by Train (Amtrak & Metra)
If you arrive via Amtrak or regional Metra trains, you will step right out into Union Station or Ogilvie Transportation Center. Both stations are located right in the West Loop, walking distance or a short cab ride from most downtown hotels.
Day 1: Big Views, Deep Dish, and Lakefront Fireworks
Morning: Stack of Pancakes, Art, and Grant Park
Start your first morning downtown at The Original Pancake House in the Loop. Order a stack of their famous buttermilk pancakes or go big with the massive Apple Pancake to load up on carbs for a full day of walking.
From breakfast, take an easy stroll over to Millennium Park to catch your reflection in Cloud Gate (everyone just calls it “The Bean”). After snapping a few photos, walk right into The Art Institute of Chicago to spend a couple of hours getting lost among Impressionist masterpieces by Monet and Seurat.
Once you are done inside, wander south through Grant Park to check out Buckingham Fountain. It is one of the largest in the world, and during the summer, it shoots water 150 feet straight into the air every hour on the hour.
Afternoon: Architecture Boat Tour and Wizarding Magic
Walk over to the Chicago Riverwalk and hop on an Architecture River Cruise. Floating down the main river branches while expert docents break down how the skyline grew back bigger and bolder after the Great Chicago Fire is easily the best way to see the city.
When you get back on land, head up Michigan Avenue to pop into the official Harry Potter Shop Chicago. You can grab yourself a cold Butterbeer at the bar inside and check out house gear. Right down the street, stop by the massive four-story Starbucks Reserve Roastery for a quick afternoon pick-me-up or an espresso cocktail.
Evening: Lou Malnati’s and Pier Fireworks
You cannot come to Chicago and skip deep dish. Head over to Lou Malnati’s Pizzeria in River North for a classic buttercrust pie layered with mozzarella and chunky tomato sauce.
Timing is everything for the rest of your night. If your day falls on a Wednesday or Saturday, walk down to Navy Pier after dinner. Every Wednesday at 9:00 PM and Saturday at 10:00 PM during the summer, they set off an incredible fireworks show right over the water of Lake Michigan.
Day 2: Sand Dunes and Relaxed City Evening
Morning: Playful Banter at Ed Debevic’s
Kick off day two with breakfast at Ed Debevic’s. It is a retro 1950s style diner where the food is great, but the real draw is the waitstaff serving up hilarious, sassy banter alongside your eggs and bacon.
Afternoon: Nature Break at Indiana Dunes
Time to break away from the high-rises for a bit. Catch the South Shore Line train directly out of Millennium Station or take a quick one hour drive down the lake to Indiana Dunes National Park.
Drop by the Visitor Center to grab a quick trail map, then hit the Dune Succession Trail. You will hike through quiet forests and over massive sand dunes right on the edge of Lake Michigan. On a clear summer day, you can lay out on the beach and look back across the blue water to see the distant Chicago skyline floating on the horizon.

Evening: Dinner and Riverwalk Stroll
Head back into downtown Chicago for a relaxed evening. Grab dinner in River North or the West Loop, then take a stroll along the lit-up Chicago Riverwalk to unwind after your day in nature.
Day 3: Gothic Quadrangles, Chinatown, 360 CHICAGO TILT, and Fresh Bites
Morning: Hogwarts Atmosphere at UChicago
Hop on the CTA Metra train or the #6 bus downtown and head south to Hyde Park to visit the University of Chicago. Walking through the quiet, ivy-covered quadrangles around Harper Memorial Library and Rockefeller Chapel feels exactly like stepping onto the grounds of Hogwarts, complete with soaring limestone spires and stone gargoyles.
Lunch and Afternoon: Chinatown and Street Markets
Take the CTA Red Line back north to Chicago’s Chinatown. Walk under the iconic Dragon Gate in Chinatown Square, pop into local shops, and grab a fresh boba tea or a sweet pastry from a bakery.
Summer in Chicago also means neighborhood street markets pop up everywhere. Depending on the day, wander through the Daley Plaza Farmers Market downtown or local weekend artisan fairs to check out local produce, art, and snacks.
Late Afternoon: Fresh Lunch at Beatrix
For a late lunch, head to Beatrix in River North. It is a fantastic, light-filled spot with a fresh seasonal menu featuring amazing salads, burgers, fresh juices, and a bakery counter that is almost impossible to walk past without grabbing something for later.
Evening: Magnificent Mile & 360 CHICAGO TILT
Finish your trip on North Michigan Avenue with a stroll along The Magnificent Mile. Before sunset, head up to 360 CHICAGO on the 94th floor of the former John Hancock Center. The observation deck offers sweeping lake and skyline views, but the real highlight is trying TILT, an enclosed glass platform that tilts you outward at a 30 degree angle over Michigan Avenue. Grab a drink at CloudBar while up top to toast to an awesome three days in the city.
A Few Helpful Tips
- Getting Around Town: Grab a 3-day CTA Ventra pass for your phone. The “L” train system and buses connect downtown, UChicago, Chinatown, and the markets easily, so you will rarely need to pay for a rideshare.
- Fireworks Schedule: Summer fireworks at Navy Pier run weekly every Wednesday night at 9:00 PM and Saturday night at 10:00 PM from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
